Luke 9:1 “Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.”
There is a movie entitles ”Walking Tall”. In the movie, Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) plays an ex-soldier turned sheriff, who is trying to clean up his town. The first thing that he does after becoming sheriff is to fire all of his corrupt deputies.
He is then left without any deputies to help carry out his vision and his duties for the town. He drives to meet one of his childhood friends, played by Johnnie Knoxville and deputizes him by giving him a badge. This badge now authorizes Johnnie to operate on behalf of the sheriff. The badge also gives him the right to govern over the law-breakers in the town. In similar fashion, Jesus called His disciples together to help Him carry out His vision and duties for the world. They had watched Him as He healed the sick and ministered to the needy, but He would now transfer authority to His followers.
This authority gave them the right to operate on His behalf and legal ability to exercise judgment over devils and diseases.
Devils signify spiritual oppression and diseases signify physical infirmity. Jesus released the authority over both!
Luke 10:19; " 19 Behold, I give unto you power (Delegate Citizenship Authority) to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." emphasises add
Romans 13:1-7; "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever, therefore, resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath but also for conscience sake. 6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their dues: a tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Summary
1. The same power and authority released to the disciples have been released to us: Jesus suffered, bled, died, and was buried; but God raised Him from the dead with all power in His hand. This power and authority are now transferred to all believers at the point of salvation.
When we are born-again, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives (Ephesians 1:13) and the blood of Jesus is applied to our sin (Hebrews 9:22). The Holy Spirit and the blood release the power and the authority.
2. We have been deputized: (Luke 10:19) The Holy Spirit is our weapon (which we will discuss later) and the blood of Jesus is our badge. Just like the badge deputized the sheriff’s friend in the movie, the blood deputizes us in real life. We now have the legal right and authority to operate in the Kingdom and on behalf of Jesus. This authority is released from heaven but intended to be exercised in the earth.
3. We can rule over both the external and the internal: The text teaches us that this authority releases us to rule over:
The devil and demons, which represent external attacks and spiritual oppression Diseases, which represent internal infirmities and physical sickness. God wants us to rightly rule over every attack, external or internal, and to freely flow in His authority; that the world may know that after 2,000 years, Christ is still the answer!
Do you know better understand your benefits? You have been deputized by Jesus to operate on His behalf in the earth. Are you ready to carry out your duties today? You have the legal right to rule over devils and diseases.
Now get up and allow God to use you this day for His service that divine resources may meet human needs!
CONFESSION
Heavenly Father, I am a born-again believer. The Holy Spirit is my weapon and the Blood of Jesus is my badge. You have given me the power and authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing shall by any means hurt me because I walk in your authority. In Jesus’ name Amen!
