Liberty * Freedom * in God

Liberty!  The Old Testament Law was the schoolmaster that taught us the frailties of humanity.  The only person that ever fulfilled the Law was Jesus Christ.  It was so strict that no human could actually live a perfect life by its rules.  Paul said, in the verses leading up to our text, “But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.”  Galatians 3:11, 12

Galatians 3:13 “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:”

The person who lives in right relationship with God does so by embracing what God arranges for him. Doing things for God is the opposite of entering into what God does for you. Habakkuk had it right:

"The person, who believes God, is set right by God -- and that's the real life.’

Rule-keeping does not naturally evolve into living by faith, but only perpetuates itself in more and more rule-keeping, a fact observed in Scripture: The one who does these things [rule-keeping] continues to live by them. The Good News is that our text teaches us that Christ rescued us from the Law’s curse and condemnation.  He became a curse in our place.

Jesus was once asked which of all the commandments of the Law was the greatest.  Check out His response:  “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."   Matthews 22:37-39

Summary:

  1. The Law was too strict for any human being to ever fulfill   and thereby condemned us all.
  2. Jesus lived a perfect life and fulfilled the Law.
  3. Jesus exchanged His right with those (us) that did not deserve it.
  4. Jesus simplified things for us.  We are now to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind; and love others as much as we love ourselves.
  5. God’s Grace (unmerited favor) keeps us when we mess up.
  6. God did all of this, so that we could be free and redeemed from the curse of the law.
  7. One of the greatest benefits of our new citizenship is liberty!  We have been made free by the blood of Jesus.  He has made us righteous, even though – in ourselves  we could never be.  We should not allow anyone to condemn us after Christ has redeemed us.

Receive your liberty and walk in it.  Do not entangle yourself again with sin.  If you fall into sin, follow 1 John 1:9 which tells us to repent, confess our sin to God and move forward!

Are you a born-again believer?  If so, then you must know that you have been made righteous by Christ and accept that fact, once and for all.  Move forward and not backward.

Strive for progression and not regression.  Settle in your mind that you are free and seek to enjoy your liberty in Christ!

CONFESSION

Heavenly Father,   I am a born-again believer.  I have been made the righteousness of God by faith. I am not under the law, nor its curse. I have been redeemed from the inevitable fate of the law and have been granted forgiveness because of the price that Jesus paid on Calvary’s Cross!  I am free and I walk in my liberty today and every day. I will never the same, never be the same!  In Jesus’ name Amen!
